Happy Days 66: Barcelona at 2 a.m.

Day 10, Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, 2 a.m.

It’s 2 a.m. and we just got done with “dinner” of Turkish food here at Hotel Reding in Barcelona.

Luna de Istanbul along Plaza Catalunya was open until 2 a.m., and so we were able to sneak in a couple of orders…kofte and an eggplant dish, plus lots of pita bread. The person behind the counter spoke only Spanish, but he spoke slowly enough for me to understand. It was fun to carry on a conversation. I’m getting braver. It helped to open up our Rick Steves dictionary once in a while.

It’s a balmy 75 degrees here and people are everywhere! As we got out of the metro at 11 p.m., we walked up the staircase and bam, there they were. Skateboarding, promenading, sitting on benches, walking to their hotels, walking to some other destination. Up till now.

Did I mention it’s 2 a.m.?

Sierra and Joy on the RENFE metro earlier in the evening

The metro system is great. It helps that both my sister and I have a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish, and everyone is helpful and friendly. We must not look too clueless as someone even asked us for directions.

I’ll probably be half-dead in the morning, but meanwhile, I am loving this. I love Ireland, too, for all the wonderful memories and the beautiful countryside, and France was magnifique, but Spain is by far mi favorito! I am most familiar with the language and the atmosphere is lively. The only thing I’m sad over is that Wesley isn’t here to practice his Spanish on all these friendly people. (Hola, Wesley!) Maybe someday…

I’d better go to bed, as we have an early start to our whirlwind self-tour of Barcelona tomorrow and then we’ll take the overnight train to Madrid.

Hasta luego! Chau!

PS Muchas besos a mi esposo Drew! Feliz aniversario, mi caro!
